چکیده

The transverse velocity distribution of a sodium atomic beam, laser cooled in one dimension, has been measured with sub-recoil resolution. A velocity-selective detection system was employed to separate the longitudinal and transverse velocity components to provide a direct measure of the transverse velocity distribution. The effects of varying the cooling laser intensity and detuning on the derived transverse temperature are presented, and show a remarkable insensitivity to the laser intensity. Atomic velocities within a factor of two of the recoil velocity

One-dimensional laser cooling of an atomic beam in a sealed vapor cell

We describe a simple experiment that demonstrates one-dimensional laser cooling in a sealed vapor cell. A velocity selective optical pumping scheme was first used to define a collimated beam of atoms within the cell. A particular velocity group of atoms was labeled by optical pumping with one laser and detected by absorption with a second laser. Transverse cooling of this velocity group, which ...

Loading of a cold atomic beam into a magnetic guide

We discuss recent experimental progress on the realization of a commonly called continuous atom laser. We demonstrate experimentally the continuous and pulsed loading of a slow and cold atomic beam into a magnetic guide. The slow beam is produced using a vapor loaded laser trap, which ensures two-dimensional magneto-optical trapping, as well as cooling by a moving molasses along the third direc...

Anisotropy of optical suppression in photoassociative ionization collisions within a slow, collimated sodium atom beam

We report the observation of polarization anisotropy in the optical suppression of photoassociative ionization (PAI) collisions. Binary collisions occur within a tightly collimated and optically cooled velocity group of a single sodium beam. A laser beam, blue-detuned with respect to the atomic resonance transition, crosses the atomic beam and suppresses the PAI rate. We measure this suppressio...

Stochastic cooling of trapped atoms is considered for a laser-beam configuration with beam waists equal or smaller than the extent of the atomic cloud. It is shown, that various effects appear due to this transverse confinement, among them heating of transverse kinetic energy. Analytical results of the cooling in dependence on size and location of the laser beam are presented for the case of a ...

Atom lithography with laser-cooled silicon atoms

An all-solid-state 252 nm coherent light source with external cavities for laser cooling silicon atoms using twostage highly efficient frequency conversions has been developed. With the coherent light source, it is possible to manipulate the atomic motion of the silicon atoms, which is necessary for nano-process applications. In this paper, deflection, collimation, and axial velocity selection ...
